Here we list the comments we received on the State of Collaboration from our survey respondents. We undertook this study on the State of Collaboration to understand and assess current practices in collaboration and future outlook on collaboration. Over 450 respondents participated in the survey conducted by All Collaboration in January and February 2010.

Here we provide a graphical representation of the survey responses we received on the State of Collaboration. Three main messages emerged from our survey responses. 1) Complex collaboration is already a significant work activity for many people, and will only grow in importance. 2) Successful collaboration requires mostly the good principles of project management applied to dispersed teams. 3) Keep it simple on the collaboration tools.

The ALL ONE (TAO) of Collaboration

Achieving collaboration is synchronization or struggle – and everything in between – between the ALL (the collective, or the organization, or the enabler) and the ONE (the individual, or the enabled). This synchronization or struggle stems from the organization collaboration culture which may be weak or strong, in which the individual performs with personal motivation for collaboration that itself may be weak or strong. Collaboration nirvana happens when the ALL and the ONE - the enabler and the enabled - are aligned strongly on collaboration efforts.

Enthusiasts to Laggards

In one of the first comprehensive studies, according to Cisco, it found that personal attitudes towards collaboration and company collaborative culture are as important as collaborative tools. Four collaboration segments, based on habits and beliefs, are identified as: Enthusiasts, Comfortable, Reluctant and Laggards. This looks quite similar to the Technology Adoption Curve in Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey A. Moore in which the author proposes the following segmentation: Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Majority, Late Majority and Laggards. Does this suggest that Cisco’s Enthusiasts are Moore’s Innovators and Early Adopters?
